February 24 2025: The Rust development team is bustling with innovative new features and updates on the Aux2 branch, aimed at enriching the gaming experience for all players. Here’s a glimpse into what’s cooking in the world of Rust.

Hack Week Highlights

Hack week has been a hive of activity, with developers diving into intriguing projects that could revolutionize Rust gameplay. Some of the standout features include:

  • Drawbridge: Work is ongoing to create a functional drawbridge that can be lowered to connect bases, adding strategic depth to base design and defence.

  • Drones Dropping Grenades: A new feature is being developed where drones can drop grenades, introducing dynamic aerial attack options.

  • Automated Testing: Enhancements in automated testing processes aim to minimize errors and ensure more stable game updates.

  • Rolling Tires Improvements: Visual effects for tire rolling are being upgraded to improve realism and feedback in vehicle movements.

These projects embody the innovative spirit of Hack week, each designed to deepen and enhance the Rust gaming experience, but none guaranteed to make it into the game!

Cooking 2.0

The culinary arts in Rust are about to get a significant upgrade with Cooking 2.0, now available on the Aux2 branch for community testing. This update brings a host of new features, including:

  • Cooking Workbench Revamp: A new workbench loaded with fresh recipes allows players to create throwable pies, quiches, and tarts, each offering unique boosts.

  • Enhanced Food Preservation: Fridges now require electricity, extending the life of stored foods—cooked meals can last up to 24 hours, while raw ingredients stay fresh for 6 hours.

  • Food Management Improvements: Players can track the expiration date on food items, helping manage resources more efficiently and avoid waste.

  • Richer Recipe Selection: The expanded recipe book includes a variety of pies made from new ingredients like wheat and eggs.

This update is still in testing on the Aux2 staging branch, with a full release expected in March.

New Additions: Chicken Coops and Beekeeping

Rust is introducing two major additions that promise to add a new dimension to gameplay:

  • Chicken Coops: Players can now raise chickens, with coops that monitor hunger, thirst, affection, and sunlight exposure, all influencing egg production rates.

  • Beekeeping: Players can manage beehives and produce honey, which can be sold at the Bandit Camp. Craftable beehives and honey production add economic benefits and potential for new recipes.

Floral Update and Engineering Workbench

The world of Rust is set to bloom with the introduction of new flowers like orchids, roses, and sunflowers, adding aesthetic and potential functional value. Additionally, a new Engineering Workbench consolidates various engineering-related items into a single workstation, making crafting more streamlined. What Can You Learn?

  • Electrical Components - Wires, switches, batteries, and advanced circuits.

  • Plumbing Systems - Pipes, valves, pumps, and water filtration.

  • Industrial Equipment - Conveyor belts, factory machines, and automated systems.

  • Car Parts - Engines, transmissions, tires, and other vehicle components.

Other Notable Updates

  • Item Ownership: A revamped item ownership feature will display the creator’s name on crafted items, enhancing player interaction.

  • Drone Buff: Drones now have an extended control range and doubled health, making them more versatile and resilient.

  • Miscellaneous Improvements: New single potted plant, progress on the hopper (loot storage attachment), and work on tigers and jungle ruins.
